Original Freedom Fighter Peter Tosh Lives On

Peter Tosh was born Winston Hubert McIntosh October 19, 1944 in Bluefields, Westmoreland, Jamaica.

Tosh met Bob Marley in Trenchtown and became one of the three original Wailers. A strong-willed man, Tosh withdrew from the Wailers in 1974 after Chris Blackwell refused to issue his first solo album. Songs like "Get Up, Stand Up" written and performed by Tosh with the Wailers have become favorites in the world of reggae.

He released a series of singles on his own Intel-Diplo record label. He performed and toured solo with the likes of Santa Davis, George Fulllwood, Tony Chin, Chinna Smith, Sly & Robbie, Mikey Chung, Donald Kinsey, Keith Sterling, Robbie Lyn, Dean Fraser and and many more of Jamaica's great musicians.

Tosh began recording under the name Peter Tosh, and released his solo debut, Legalize It, in 1976 on CBS Records. The title track soon became an anthem for the marijuana movement and was a favorite at Tosh's concerts. As Marley preached his "One Love" message, Tosh railed against the hypocritical "shitstem," and became a favorite target of the Jamaican police receiving severe beatings on several occasions. Always taking the militant approach, he released Equal Rights in 1977 His lyric "I don't want no peace, I want equal rights and justice!" would become a rallying cry for the world's downtrodden masses.

Bush Doctor, Mystic Man, and Wanted: Dread or Alive followed, all released on EMI Records, home to the Rolling Stones, which released these albums on their Rolling Stones label imprint.

The Rolling Stones recorded "Don't Look Back" with Peter Tosh, performing it with him on the TV program Saturday Night Live.

After the release of 1983's Mama Africa Tosh went into self-imposed exile, seeking the spiritual advice of traditional medicine men in Africa, and trying to free himself from recording agreements that distributed his records in South Africa.

He was awarded the Grammy for Best Reggae Performance in 1987 for "No Nuclear War". Tosh was in the beginning of an entire restructuring of his career when, shortly after the release of his 1987 album, No Nuclear War, he was murdered in his home during a burglary. He died on September 11, 1987. Only one of the three killers was caught.

In 1992, the documentary film Stepping Razor Red X was released which chronicles the details behind this artist's message with interviews and narration with Tosh himself, rare concert footage and information on the unanswered questions surrounding his untimely passing.

The Peter Tosh Memorial Park is located at his birthplace Belmont, in the vicinty of Bluefields, Jamaica. The mausoleum is located there along with a library and museum.

THE paths of singer/songwriters Bob Andy and Boris Gardiner have crossed many times over the past 45 years, but none was more joyous than on Heroes Day when both received the Order of Distinction during the National Honours and Awards ceremony at King's House.

Andy, 62, is best known for seminal songs like Fire Burning, Unchained and I Want to Go Back Home. His OD, in the Commander class, was for sterling contribution to the development of reggae music.

Gardiner, 63, one of reggae's unheralded heroes, was rewarded in the Officer class.

Besides recording hit songs such as Love's Been Good to Me and I Wanna Wake up With You, he has played bass on some notable songs such as Larry Marshall's Nanny Goat, Junior Murvin's massive Police and Thieves and Young, Gifted and Black, a hit in Britain for Andy and Marcia Griffiths during the early 1970s.

Typically, the soft-spoken Gardiner took his award in stride.

"I've had a heart condition since I was 17, and I never knew I would live this long," he said. "The older I get the heart gets stronger, so under the circumstances I'm pleased."

The dreadlocked Andy said the award was the icing on the cake, for he has received much adulation over the years from the public.

"From the get-go, the Jamaican people have recognised and acknowledged me and I have spent every moment after that making sure that I make good music," he said.

Gardiner is currently working on a new album. Andy's latest album, Reggae Land, co-produced by he and Danny Breakenridge, was recently released.

Interestingly, Lennie Little-White, who directed Andy in the 1978 movie Children of Babylon, also received the OD (Commander class) on Monday. The man behind the popular soap opera, Royal Palm Estate, he was cited for outstanding contribution to comunication and film.

Asley 'Grub' Cooper of Fab Five fame, also received the OD (Commander class) for contribution to the music industry.

Record producer, Lloyd 'King Jammys' James, who has been producing hit songs for almost 30 years, was awarded the OD (Officer rank) for sterling contribution to the music industry.

Another recipient of the OD (Officer rank) was singer/songwriter, Ernie Smith, a prolific hitmaker during the 1970s. He was recognised for his outstanding contribution to music and Jamaica's cultural development.

ON TOUR: Groundation

Since the release of We Free Again in 2004 Groundation has truly become a worldwide movement. Now with the October release of Upon the Bridge they are ready to show where they’ve been and where they’re heading.

With shows in over thirteen countries spanning four continents in the past two years the world is starting to take notice. Highlights include playing for over 45,000 fans in Morocco, 10,000 people in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and 15,000 during a headlining spot at SummerJam in Germany. Groundation also played both of the USA’s premier reggae festivals including a headlining spot at Sierra Nevada World Music Fest and an inspired set at Reggae on the River. In addition they have shared the stage with many of reggae’s all time greats.

Earlier in 2006 Groundation released their first ever dub album, Dub Wars. It was met with stellar reviews including 3 1/2 stars from Rolling Stone Magazine who said, “This collection gives the dub treatment to tracks from the group’s stellar albums Hebron’s Gate and We Free Again, adding a hypnotic resonance to their groove-based songs.”

Winner of the 2005 North Bay music award for best ska/reggae band, Groundation, seamlessly blends reggae, jazz, and dub. Formed in 1998, by three jazz students at Sonoma State University (Northern California) Groundation has continued to grow and evolve. Each of their four previous studio albums, plus one dub album, have told part of the story of humanity and have led us to where we are now, Upon the Bridge. This is the individual's journey beyond their known world to a bridge of mythic proportion. Singer and guitarist Harrison Stafford said “all of our collective experiences have brought us to this point. Upon the Bridge is a confrontation both musically and socially. It represents where we, as a society, are today; searching for solid ground”

Keeping with the Groundation practice of joining their original and distinctive sound with the foundation that is Reggae music, the album will feature the voices of two Jamaican legends, Pablo Moses and Ijahman Levi. They represent the link to the golden era of Jamaican roots Reggae and are pure singers with over sixty years of experience between them.

Upon the Bridge will feature original art and packaging by San Francisco artist Giovanni Maki and will include a promises to not only be an experience for the ears but the eyes as well. With an extensive US tour planned to support this album many more people will soon join the movement that is Groundation.

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. Click here to email Justine.

In September, 2006 Peter Fleming of bandVillage began to produce the eguide.
