TENOR SAW

#5 of the "19 picks of wicked '80's Dancehall Hits" The Beat Magazine, Annual Dancehall Issue 2006

Review:  Tenor Saw passed in 1988. His original, unique singjay style and pattern was a great loss to the dancehall massive; some of his songs remain a staple throughout the dances to this day. Crank up: "Ring The Alarm," "Fever," "Lots of Signs," "Pumpkin Belly."

Released in October, this is a reissue of a one-of-kind live performance and radio interview release from the great dancehall reggae king Tenor Saw. This sound board-quality material was recorded on his first tour to England in 1985 on the heels of his groundbreaking smash hits "Pumpkin Belly" and the dancehall anthem "Ring The Alarm." Material from stage shows, dancehall sessions and radio interviews was compiled and released by Sky High as a tribute to the late singer.

Additional performances from a teen age Yami Bolo and Barrington Levy singing "Big Bout Yah" are featured.

Available at Ernie B's Reggae, Ethiopian Taste,  or www.amazon.com

10th annual Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - The Grammys are coming to Jamaica! On Thursday, January 25- Saturday, January 27, five Grammy winners, accounting for 12 of those iconic victrola statuettes between them, will be performing at the 10th Annual Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival: The Art of Music at the Aqueduct on Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica. An eclectic gathering of established legends and new favorites will perform during the 2007 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, including Michael Bolton, Kenny Rogers, Shaggy, NEWA, Christopher Cross, Monty Alexander, Pieces of A Dream and Cyndi Lauper.

Recognizing the growing attendance and the continued need for an inspired venue, event organizer Turn Key Productions has moved the festival to a new seaside location and announced an ambitious U.S. amateur talent search competition. While remaining in Rose Hall, the festival will move from the driving range at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course to a seaside clearing in between the ocean and the 8th fairway, using the ruins of an ancient aqueduct as a backdrop.

Walter Elmore, Turn Key Productions Chief, is more excited about this years festival than perhaps any other. The Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival has a special aura to it unlike any other event that I've produced or experienced. It is a combination of the musicians, the people, the setting and the infectious vibe of Jamaica that create an almost spiritual experience for anyone who attends this event. I am absolutely looking forward to this January and plan to blow away the minds of each and every attendee!

The Art of Reggae

Built into this years format will be a special tribute to reggae, the music intrinsic to the island nation of Jamaica. A special Art of Reggae performance featuring Shaggy, Luciano, Freddie MacGregor, Wayne Wonder and some more of the biggest legends of reggae will join together with an all-star band to perform all of their greatest hits. David Shields, Deputy Director of Tourism for the Jamaica Tourist Board, was especially excited about this segment of the festival, commenting, "Reggae is so vital to the identity of Jamaican people, our spirit and our culture. It is an art form that has traveled around the world and introduced the world to Jamaica and Jamaican people. It is one of our great ambassadors to the world and we look forward to celebrating it at the 10th Annual Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival."

David Shields, Jamaica's Deputy Director of Tourism, added that over the past 10 years, the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival has contributed to the cultural fabric of Jamaica. He observed that 52 percent of those surveyed at this year's event were repeat attendees and 92 percent indicated that they would like to return. He thanked Turnkey Productions for their professionalism, and tour operators for their contribution to Jamaica's growth in visitor arrivals this year.

WHO WAS JOE HIGGS and WHY WAS HE DUBBED
"FATHER OF REGGAE"?
According to reggae music history, in the early 1950s through 1960s when it was virtually impossible for the residents of TRENCH TOWN and other neighboring communities to even be considered for a "real" job in Jamaica's main-stream work force, it was JOE HIGGS that these underprivileged ghetto outcasts would ultimately turn to for musical guidance. Though a youth himself at the time, this self-taught musical prodigy would convert his 19 THIRD STREET, TRENCH TOWN, tenement backyard into a sort of musical training camp where he would teach his peers some of the lessons he had learned. These music lessons or "jam-sessions" as they were commonly called, were often rigorous in voice technique, breath control, harmony structuring, effective song-writing, and of course, learning to play the 'box' guitar by ear or sound.

In a 1980s interview with his writer, Roger Steffens, JOE HIGGS explained, "We basically did everything by ear or sound as I myself did not know anything about music notes at the time. I didn't know "C" from "D" from "G" but I was very much aware of sound." HIGGS would later educate his students on the copyright law as well.

Most of JOE HIGGS' students went on to become musical giants, each in their own respect, and some have later accredited him for their musical success. Among those he tutored were BOB MARLEY,  BUNNY WAILER, PETER TOSH, JIMMY CLIFF, JUDY MOWATT, DERRICK HARRIOTT and the WAILING SOULS.
His most successful student to date remains the internationally renown "KING OF REGGAE MUSIC," the HONORABLE ROBERT NESTA (BOB) MARLEY, O.M.  Kovens Conference Center

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. Click here to email Justine.

In September, 2006 Peter Fleming of bandVillage began to produce the eguide.
