NEW WEBSITE Adam Arredondo is a 27 year old Southern California native with a reggae vision. Already a veteran in the reggae music industry as a keyboard player, Adam's love of the freshest music "outta Yard" has inspired him to found Shockout.com, a website devoted to educating the massive about the current trends in reggae. Reggae Festival E-Guide's Editor, Justine Ketola caught up with Adam to discuss his new venture. Q: Many of us share your passion for the latest hits from Jamaica, why did you start this website and radio show? A: "Here in South County, (Costa Mesa to San Diego, CA) you have Third World, Burning Spear, The Wailers and Eek A Mouse coming on tour. There is a huge reggae fan base here, they go to concerts, and buy CD's on those same groups. Our idea is to take those same people and they will spend the money and time on the new artists. When I play music from artists like Gentleman, Gyptian and Jah Cure for these same people and they fall in love with them immediately. They all say the same thing,: Where can I get their music, Are they playing here soon? My theory with Shockout is to take those people and multiply them, not create a market but nurture it." Adam aims to promote Shockout to the American West Coast, especially in Southern California through avenues such as My Space.com where there is a vibrant reggae community. Q: What does Shockout do to help the artists? A: "Primarily it educates people who already like reggae. We have a lot of people in reggae who are in for the business, but not in the business for reggae music. This is a public service type of website. It will serve as a long term vehicle for artists, record labels, managers, and deejays to gain exposure." Q: How did you get involved as a musician in reggae? A: "I first started playing reggae when I was 18 years old. I learned to play by listening to Gregory Isaacs' release SOON FORWARD. I spent a lot of time surfing as a kid, and listening to Bob Marley. I spent a paycheck on a Casio keyboard from Costco and I kept that Gregory Isaacs album on the turntable for a month, listening to it over and over.....and playing along." Over the years Adam has toured with Eek-A Mouse, Abijah, Junior Reid and Boom Shaka and performed with The Lion's Den, Skarcha, and Detour Posse. By day he is at Equity Financials as a mortgage specialist. Be sure to checkout www.Shockout.com for his weekly radio program that covers the spectrum of authentic Jamaican hits both past and present and also his weekly chart of the newest tracks from Jamaica. |

Healthy Place for Righteous Anger: Immanent Nuclear Bombing By Curt Byrum
Some believe a spiritual person is one that observes laws, feasts, traditions and/or Sabbaths. Others believe it is one who possesses higher knowledge and self-discipline, and some may think it is one who is irie with everything and full of worldly wisdom. Views vary according to an individual's perception. At times, when I think of a spiritual person, I think of a man in a robe meditating in a botanical garden. This thought is usually followed by the realization that I'd probably be more peaceful too if I could sit and meditate in a beautiful garden everyday! I think that there are many attributes a person may posses in order to be a spiritual being. Could it be that anger is also a spiritual attribute? Without anger, the scales of justice may remain unbalanced. Rarely, do we ever equate an angry person as being spiritual, though I believe there is a healthy place for righteous anger in this world; as long as it only involves non-violent acts that is not directed against nature or imposed upon other people. One example is biblical Jesus who overturned the money-changer's tables outside the temple as a protest to the greed of the religious leaders of his time. A shocking and unforgettable example is the Buddhist monks who performed ritual suicide by setting themselves on fire in protest against anti-Buddhist policies by the South Vietnamese government in 1963. Protests such as these made people take notice and injustices were changed. Recently, threats of nuclear assault by The United States of America (A.K.A. "Operation Tyrant"), and Iran have been at the forefront of the world news. Like two schoolyard bullies, they have hurled threats toward each other; hoping to cast the other into oblivion. The problem is self-evident. Their actions negatively affect all life forms on this planet. The President of the United States, George W. Bush has recently ordered testing for a nuclear bunker busting bomb (A.K.A. "Divine Strake") in the Nevada desert. It's the largest bomb ever made with 1.4 million pounds of explosives. It's expected to toss a cloud over the city of Las Vegas on June 2, 2006. Anyone who loves and appreciates life on this planet can see that this devastating event is not something to look forward to as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd! If this angers your spirit as it does mine, please join me this week in writing to Nevada Senator Harry Reid concerning the use of the Nevada desert as a nuclear testing site (www.giveemhellharry.com). Pray, that these world leaders' plans would be thwarted. Let's end the needless destruction of the Earth before it's too late! With a passionate voice of non-violent anger, it could be possible to change the future. Make everyday an Earth Day, we are dependent on Her. One Love, Passionate for human rights and politics, bourgeoning writer Curt Byrum keeps his readers abreast of current news events. In addition to being a writer, he is a Respiratory Therapist residing in California. Curt also has a passion for music of all genres, writes experimental music and is a poet/lyricist.
