ASTON "FAMILY MAN" BARRETT MAKES CLAIM FOR $105 Million
Wailers bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett has been in a British court to make a claim that he and the estate of his late brother drummer Carlton "Carly" Barrett are owed the royalties from a contract signed with Island Records in 1974, plus earnings from songs co-written with Bob Marley. If the ruling goes in his favor, he could receive up to $105 million U.S. dollars. Universal/Island Records and the Marley family as defendants in the case say Barrett gave up his right to further royalties in a 1994 settlement where several thousand dollars in payments were distributed. The bassist was a member of the band from 1969 until Marley's death in 1981. He claims that Bob Marley acted as the leader for the group and made a contractual agreement on behalf of he and his brother with Island Records in 1974. Universal/Island Records say all the former band members agreed to monetary settlements to end any further litigation. The court was told Barrett and drummer brother Carlton - who was murdered in 1986 - had met Marley in the late 1960s when the singer was not well known outside the Caribbean. Barrett's lawyer Stephen Bate told the court that the early collaborations with Marley built on the "extraordinary songwriting abilities of Bob Marley". However, "The chief reason for the musical breakthrough and international acclaim was Aston Barrett and his brother." By 1976, the band had an agreement that any session musicians would be paid a fee, Marley would take 50% of earnings and the rest would be shared between the Barrett brothers, said Mr. Bate. Reportedly the court has had to define reggae music's rhythmic terms such as "shuffle" and "bubble" in the testimony of Barrett who has had to define what part he contributed to the composition of Marley's top-selling releases. Roger Steffens, reggae archivist and Marley expert as well as other
members of the reggae music industry have been summoned to the court.
Marley's widow Rita is due to testify during the hearing, which began on
3/17/06 and has continued over the past two weeks.
SEAN PAUL RAISES HIS "TEMPERATURE" ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS Sean Paul has once again claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Temperature," which is the Top Airplay Gainer for the fourth time in five weeks as it rockets to #1 after 11 weeks on the charts (as of 3/23/06) This marks the third time Sean Paul has held down the #1 single - he previously rose to the peak of the charts with "Get Busy" and "Baby Boy" featuring Beyonce from his previous album Dutty Rock. "Temperature" is the second single off Sean's new VP/Atlantic album, The Trinity, which is fast approaching platinum status here in the US and has already sold well over a million copies outside of the US. It debuted at #7 in late September, with 107,000 copies sold in its first week, a US sales record for a Jamaican artist. The rise of "Temperature" makes Sean Paul the most successful
Jamaican artist ever on the US charts (Bob Marley's Legend is the world's
top-selling catalog album) with three #1 singles, five Top Ten Hits, and
eight chart entries. Other Top Ten hits include "Gimme The Light" and The
Trinity's first single "We Be Burnin," which peaked at #7.

THE RETURN OF REGGAE SUNSPLASH TO JAMAICA Reggae Sunsplash, which originated in 1978, was the precursor of the Reggae festival concept - a world-class showcase of the Reggae and Dancehall stars from home and abroad, infused with a select sampling of international acts. The festival easily cemented its place as a premier event on the annual cultural calendar of Jamaica, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the island. The 2006 staging of Sunsplash will include the same elements which made the festival a treasure for locals and gave it world renowned stature. Held over four nights beginning August 3, and culminating on August 6th, Jamaican Independence day, the featured artists include Culture, Steel Pulse, Toots and the Maytals, Freddie McGregor, Morgan Heritage, Buju Banton, Beenie Man and Elephant Man, as well as Diana King, Maxi Priest, Wyclef Jean and UB40. The festival is now under new management, including innovative investors and some members of the original Sunsplash team. Reggae Sunsplash will bring together top-flight Reggae and Dancehall stars with an infusion of international acts. The organizers have also added a few extras this year. Some of these are designated areas for dominoes, family activities, arts, crafts and souvenir villages, skyboxes and spiral seating. There will also be two stages, including an amphitheatre which will abolish production pauses for set changes, integrated by numerous screens and surround sound. The organisers will maintain a strong emphasis on security, crowd control and health safety. Another highlight of the Festival is its new home at Richmond Estate, a sprawling 200 acre property on the edge of the sparkling, turquoise Caribbean Sea, with the majesty of Jamaica's Blue Mountains as its backdrop. Located in Priory, in the garden parish of St. Ann, home of the world famous Dunn's River Falls and the birth places of both Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley, the venue is in close proximity to Jamaica's largest concentration of hotel rooms. The Festival Park has the capacity to accommodate over 150,000 persons in the main area and 20,000 vehicles in the car park comfortably. Reggae Sunsplash patrons will also benefit from the established transportation network and the exciting leisure activities and attractions which the parish has to offer. An action packed Dancehall Night will kick off the Festival on Thursday, August 3rd, followed by Worldbeat Night on Friday, August 4th, International Night on Saturday August 5th, culminating on Sunday, August 6th with a foray into Jamaica classics with Singers' Night. Reggae Sunsplash was last held in 1997. |

| IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gathering is the Expression of our Collective HeartsBy Curt Byrum In the scriptures of old we are taught that wherever two or more people are gathered together in Jah's name, the spirit of the creator is present also. The gathering of people invites this creative force. It is when we gather that ideas and burdens are shared with one another. It is at these times that we are changed, enlightened, and encouraged. While we all appreciate our connections via e-mail, nothing can replace the benefits of community. When we come together at festivals to worship, pray, dance, or discuss life, something magical happens within us. We walk away with new inspiration and renewed passion. Let us remember that we are the conduits of the Creator's love here on Earth. Gathering is truly the expression of our collective hearts. It is how we become one love, one people. Also, the gathering of people is what most frightens oppressive government. Wherever freedom reigns in the world, there is open communication amongst people. When we gather, we gain power. When we fail to gather, we only fail ourselves. Therefore, let us not forsake the gathering of ourselves together. It is vital now as much as it has ever been. One Love, Passionate for human rights and politics, bourgeoning writer Curt Byrum keeps his readers abreast of current news events. In addition to being a writer, he is a Respiratory Therapist residing in California. Curt also has a passion for music of all genres, writes experimental music and is a poet/lyricist.
