700 People Strong
A Burning Spear benefit concert for
the St. Ann's Bay Infirmary

On August 12, 2006 a concert with Burning Spear as the headliner will take place at the Marcus Garvey Lawn in the town of St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica. There are only 700 tickets being sold for this special event and they are all priced at U.S. $30.00.

As Sonia Rodney, Spear's wife and business partner explains, "There will be no V.I.P. section, so everyone will have equal access."

The concert is a benefit for the St. Ann's Bay Infirmary which was recently established and funded by Burning Spear to meet the needs of his hometown community.

At the infirmary there is a need for an industrial size washing machine which costs U.S. $9,000.00. The proceeds of the fundraiser will go toward this purchase and other necessities at the infirmary.

Ms. Rodney and Burning Spear aka Winston Rodney plan to host this event each year as a gathering for people to enjoy reggae music and the restorative qualities of the St. Ann area of Jamaica.

To purchase tickets, visit www.burningspear.net and visit the online store. For questions email to burningspear.netgmail.com.

Bob Marley Bob Marley Crosses Over,
25 years later

This week marks the 25th Anniversary of the passing of the great King of reggae Bob Marley. His physical body left this world on May 11, 2006. Each year millions of people gain strength and feel reggae's powerful message from the great wealth of music that he and his partners created during his short time in the physical state.

There are several books available on Bob Marley that are new to the marketplace this year as well as several others from the past.

We encourage our readers to get to know the meaning of the message of reggae music in these times. These books can often shed some light on the influences and reasons behind many of the great lyrics and insp=irieation for this powerful art form.

The new 2006 print edition of the Reggae Festival Guide will contain reviews on some of the books that have been published in the past year but we also encourage you to check out websites such as Amazon.com or your local bookstore to explore what is on the shelves.

Hurrican Katrina 1,000 homes have been gutted and there are still 29,000 homes to go

Hi Reggae E-Guide Readers... This is Kristine, (E-Guide webmaster). My niece wrote this letter in hopes to find people to volunteer to help clean up the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and Rita in Louisiana, U.S. ...

Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you know, since early March, I have been volunteering at Camp Premier in St. Bernard Parish, LA. I will be here assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita until the end of July.

You all are probably aware that St. Bernard was one of the areas severely damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. What a lot of people don't know, however, is that this community still desperately needs your help. Eight months after the disaster, the Parish still looks like a war zone and residents are either living in trailers/ tents or have not returned home yet. 1,000 homes have been gutted and there are still 29,000 homes to go. These people need help now.

I am writing to you with the hope that you will come down and volunteer here in St. Bernard. If you are interested in volunteering, you can set this up individually or as a group. You would stay at Camp Premier, where you would receive lodging, hot meals, and all safety equipment would be provided. The work is gutting out houses destroyed by the hurricane. By gutting, I mean, take all debris, mud, and sheetrock out of the damaged homes, so homeowners could begin the rebuilding process before the next season of hurricanes. Before gutting your first house, you would receive training. This work is physically challenging and extremely rewarding. If you or your group chooses to stay for an extended period of time, there would be opportunities presented to take on leadership roles, such as supervising other teams or recruiting new volunteers.

You would need to provide your own transportation to the camp; I would be happy to help you research the most efficient way to get you/ your group here. If any questions or concerns come up, let me know and I will be more than happy to assist. I am willing to work to get you down here! Please pass this letter on to all your family and friends so we can all work together to rebuild St. Bernard Parish. I am attaching pictures that were taken during the storm and after the storm.

Thank you so much for your time,
Lauren Beach

If you are interested in volunteering and would like more information, please email me (Kristine) webmasterreggaefestivalguide.com, and I will put you in touch with my niece, Lauren Beach.

ISLAND RECIPE
Reggae Festival E-Guide Jamaican Vegetable Rundown

Ingredients

• 2 medium-sized dried coconuts (available in Caribbean or Latino food stores)

• (1) 2 cloves garlic chopped up

• (2) 1/2 one large green pepper cut into medium to small pieces

• (3) 1 medium sized onion chopped up

• (4) 1/4 spoon dried time leaves

• (5) 1/3 scotch bonnet pepper, discard seeds, cut into very small pieces

• (6) 1/2 tea spoon salt

• (7) 1 medium sized well ripened tomato chopped into medium to small pieces

• (8) 1 medium sized carrot cut into medium to small pieces

• (9) 1 chocho or christophine pealed and cut into medium sized pieces

• (10) 1 small head of broccoli cut into medium to small pieces

• (11) 8 to 10 medium sized whole okra

• (12) 8 small portabello mushrooms cut into two pieces (optional)

• (13) 1 medium sized zucchini cut into medium sized pieces

Process

Create Coconut Rundown
Break open the coconuts. Taste to ensure they are fresh. Remove the coconut "meat" from the shell with a knife. This is dangerous as you run the risk of cutting yourself. Therefore you should proceed cautiously until you get the hang of it. Cut the coconut "meat" into small pieces and chop up in a blender using the chop setting. Chop coconuts in batches so as not to overload the blender.

Blend the coconut with a little water in batches until the coconut is a fine consistency and the liquid resembles milk. Use a large strainer to separate the coconut from the milk. Hand squeeze any remaining milk from the residue.

In a large uncovered cooking pot bring the liquid to a rapid boil then reduce the flame to medium and cook until the water evaporates and what remains is a combination of clear liquid (oil) and custard. This takes approximately 1 to 11/2 hours. Add salt to taste. As it cools, the custard will absorb most of the oil. Yields approximately 1 cup of rundown a mixture of about 1/3 oil and 2/3 custard.

Prepare Vegetables with Rundown
Steam the carrots and chocho until tender. Do not over cook. Set aside. Bring the rundown to a boil. Add ingredients 1 through 7. Sauté for about 10 minutes. Add all the other ingredients, including the carrots and chocho, except the mushrooms. Allow to simmer until the vegetables are tender then add the mushrooms. When the mushrooms are cooked. Let sit for five minutes. Serve over white rice.

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
Current Genocide in Darfur:
Extreme Abuses in the 21st Century
By Curt Byrum
Reggae Festival E-Guide

The conflict between the nomadic Arab tribal militia "Janjaweed" and the Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa indigenous farming tribes of the region has led to the deaths of thousands. By the summer of 2004, 50,000 to 80,000 people have been killed and at least a million have been driven from their homes, causing a major humanitarian crisis in the region.

The bloody rebellion ignited in 2003 against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government, with two local rebel groups - the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudanese Liberation Army - accusing the government of oppressing the indigenous tribes in favor of the Arabs who have been fighting to take control of the land's resources from them.

The presence of the Arab Janjaweed has driven more than one million civilians, mostly farmers, into camps and settlements outside the larger towns in Darfur and Chad. They are living on the edge of survival, hostage to Janjaweed abuses. Villages have been torched systematically often twice, women have been raped and villages have been looted and destroyed.

There have been international calls for investigations into gross human rights abuses. The government of Darfur has responded by denying the abuses while attempting to manipulate and stem information leaks. At least 100,000 war-affected civilians could die in Darfur from lack of food and from disease within the next twelve months.

These atrocities have been going on for years, but just now, it seems as though it's gaining attention in the news. Let's pray that the Sudanese government breaks past practices and grant full and immediate humanitarian access.

Peace and Love,
Curt

Darfur Geography, Population, Economy & Ethnic Groups

Darfur (Arabic meaning "home of the Fur") is a region in western Sudan, bordering the Central African Republic, Libya, and Chad. It's divided into three federal states within Sudan: Gharb (West Darfur), Janub (South Darfur), and Shamal (North Darfur). Darfur covers an area of some 493,180 km (196,555 miles) - about three-quarters the size of Texas, or slightly smaller than France. Darfur has an estimated population of 8 million people. Darfur's economy is primarily based on subsidence agriculture, producing cereals, fruit, and tobacco as well as livestock in the north. The main ethnic groups are the Fur (after whom the region is named) including the Zaghawa, Masalit, and Midob who speak mainly the Nilo language and the Arab Bagarra which includes the Missieria.

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
