Reggae Festival Guide 2006, Hot Off The Press

It's that time again! What time is it? That highly anticipated period when Reggae Festival Guide's annual magazine is just about to hit the streets. The E-Guide Editor and Reggae Festival Guide Marketing Director Justine Ketola headed to the Bay Area for the privilege of working with Reggae Festival Guide Editor Kristine Shaff (HAPPY BIRTHDAY KRISTINE! MAY 30) and Graphic Designer, Doris Kalin on the final stages of the layout and design before ushering the magazine off to the printer. Publisher Kaati (a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HER TOO! May 28) and Justine checked in at Golden Eagle Press in the Reno, Nevada area. Staffed by members of the Piute/Washoe Tribes whose land is adjacent to the printing plant, Golden Eagle churns out 100,000 copies and ships the majority of them to all points in North America. As of E-Guide "press" time, the magazines should be in the binding stage and ready to ship.

Big respect to all of these folks and the rest of the staff including Ad Sales Representatives Amy Shapas and Laura Haykel, Ad Traffic Coordinator, Ed Porawski and all of the editorial contributors for a great issue. Thanks and respect to all of the 2006 advertisers, we wish you all of the success this year can bring. And special thanks to Enrique Candioti of Livity Outernational, (the 2006 RFG sponsor) for the irie cover artwork featuring Lutan Fyah.

Watch for 100% Hemp, Limited Edition Livity Outernational 2006 Reggae Festival Guide T-shirts available in just a few short weeks.

UCLA Jazz/Reggae Festival

Yes Festival-Goers! The outdoor festival season is upon us! This week kicked off the summer season with shows around the country for Memorial Day weekend. Reggae Festival Guide was in attendance at one of the nation's biggest and if the sold-out capacity crowd on Reggae Day was any indication, the nation's most successful events this past weekend.

Organized and operated entirely by UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) students, the UCLA Jazz/Reggae Festival is a two-day affair that is one of the largest student-produced events in the U.S. Jazz Day on Sunday featured Dianne Reeves, Floetry, Jack De Johnette and more. Monday's show had some of reggae's hottest newcomers such as Prince Jabba, a Jamaican sing-jay based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Irie Love, a singer based in Hawaii who is one of 12 finalists in the Red Stripe Big Break competition taking place in Jamaica. Tami Chin performed with her band in anticipation of her new release on Universal Records.

Surprise guest Cherine Anderson, the actress from the films Dancehall Queen and One Love graced the stage with a few of her new songs including the track "Good Love" produced by Sly & Robbie. An unusual amount of females prevailed in the lineup as Macka Diamond rounded out the scheduled artists, performing her usual saucy, humorous lyrics with a catchy delivery that has won many fans since her last appearance at the 2005 Sea Breeze Festival in Long Beach. She utilized the Detour Posse band to provide a backbeat to her cutting-edge dancehall style. Southern California has not seen Bushman perform since Ragga Muffins Festival, 2002 in Long Beach. Despite sound difficulties in his monitors, he managed to pull of an amazing set with Detour Posse, the area's lead backing band finished their segment on the UCLA stage.

Dancehall Deejay Assassin was to perform with Buju's band after rehearsing with them in Jamaica. For UCLA Reggae Fest, he had to perform to rhythm tracks but the crowd still gave him a great reception for his first appearance ever in the Southern California area.

Buju Banton and his band were late upon arrival to Los Angeles due to mechanical problems on their flight arriving from Miami. The group's flight arrived just minutes before their set time. Buju and his band performed Sunday 5/28 along with headliner Shabba Ranks, Damian Marley, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Ce'Cile and more at the Miami Memorial Day Fest at Bi-Centennial Park. Buju gives one of reggae's greatest performances, and although this one was cut short, he still gave the crowd medley and full-length versions of many of his hit songs.

M.C.'s Barbara Barabino and Dread Scott from KDAY 93.5 and the "Get Up Stand Up" Show provided the crowd with details on the day's proceedings as well as news on upcoming events in reggae music.

Desmond Dekker Passes On

Ska and Reggae pioneer Desmond Dekker, who was a superstar in Jamaica and had international hit singles several years before the emergence of Bob Marley, died of a heart attack in his London home on May 25.

Born Desmond Dacres in Kingston in 1941, he made the rounds of recording studios and finally hit with producer Leslie Kong. Of his hits in the British charts 1967-75, the biggest was "The Israelites," which came out in 1968 and bubbled under for six months before finally becoming a number one in the U.K. and a top ten hit in the U.S. Kong's sudden death at age 30 left a lot of Jamaican artists bereft, including Dekker and Jimmy Cliff. Dekker relocated to Britain around 1970, and he was heard in the soundtrack of the cult hit Jamaican film The Harder They Come (1972). During the "2-Tone" era in British pop of the late 1970s he made two well-received albums for the Stiff label, Black and Dekker and Compass Point.

Dekker's first hit in Jamaica had been "Honor Your Father And Mother," and he explained in the notes to his 2-CD career retrospective on Trojan in 2005 that his songs had been aimed at the downtrodden, encouraging them not to give up hope. The set was named after one of his biggest hits, "You Can Get It If You Really Want." FolkWax sends its condolences to his many fans around the world.

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
Reggae Festival E-Guide
What is the greatest threat to humanity? By Curt Byrum

Our prayers, blessings, and thoughts go out to the families and survivors of those affected by the earthquake in Indonesia this past week. It seems that every time we open the paper, watch the news, or log on to the Internet, we are bombarded with statistics of death and destruction caused by natural disasters. With the recent loss of five thousand people in Indonesia, nearly twenty-one million people have died worldwide because of natural disasters over the last century. While this is a staggering statistic to comprehend, consider that three times as many people have died in wars over this same time period.

As television newscast focus on the latest terrorist activity or the Avian Bird Flu, the most serious of dangers facing humans remain to be disease that has been around for a long time, starvation, and poverty. Nearly seven and a half million people die yearly due to these factors. Sooner or later, these things will affect us all. Unfortunately, these social problems only account for half of deaths to humans.

So, what is the greatest threat to humanity? Statistically, the answer is government. While it is necessary to be aware of the frailty of life on planet Earth, the numbers of people misplaced by natural disasters, disease and starvation pale in comparison to the actual victims of man's inhumanity to man.

This is probably the most disturbing piece of evidence I gathered in the writing of this article. Democide or murder-by-government killed one hundred and seventy-four million people in the last hundred years. This equals from head to toe, humans circling the Earth four times! Meanwhile, the media spends it's time on a Bird Flu that has only killed one hundred-sixty people worldwide.

We truly need to learn to love each other and not tolerate leaders who rule by domination, coercion, and violence. We must strive towards positive cultural and social change. How else will we continue to coexist?

A wonderful organization that actively supports humanity and protests war since 1980 is "Food Not Bombs". Click here for their Current Actions & Events page.

Blessings,
Curt

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
