Biography: Cornell Campbell

Cornell Campbell, a.k.a. the Gorgon, started singing professionally in 1956 at the age of 8, when he recorded his first songs for the legendary Coxsone Dodd at Studio One but he is best known for the series of "Gorgon Rock" records he cut with legendary producer Bunny Lee. Cornell Campbell was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1948. As a teen Campbell recorded his first material as a series of ska sides both as a solo artist and as one half of a duo with Alan Martin from 1964 to 1967. Campbell worked for a time as a member of the rocksteady harmony trio - The Uniques. As the decade ended, he led the group The Eternals, scoring a number of Studio One-generated hits including "Queen of the Minstrels" and "Stars". He joined the Sensations, singing alongside Jimmy Riley, Winston Riley's brother Buster and Aaron "Dego" Davis. The group's debut was a cover of Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers' '(I'm Not A) Juvenile Delinquent', produced by Duke Reid of Treasure Isle - the music having slowed down and changed from ska to rocksteady in the meantime.

In 1971 he again went solo, teaming with Bunny Lee, a pairing which spotlighted Campbell's distinctive falsetto to stunning effect. Despite earning acclaim for a self-titled LP issued on Trojan two years later, in 1975 he shifted from the lovers rock sensibility of recent years toward a more explicitly Rastafarian approach, with records like "Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm" and "Natural Fact"- both of which developed into his biggest hits to date. Later that year, Campbell and Lee also launched "The Gorgon," a boastful smash, which yielded a series of hit sequels. His 1977 hit "The Investigator" heralded a successful return to lover's rock style. Songs like "Boxing" and "Rope In", both released by Joe Gibbs, proved that Cornell Campbell could again rule the dance hall as the up-tempo rockers era yielded to the rub-a-dub sound in the late 70s and early 80s. Recording sporadically over the following decades, the Gorgon has resurfaced again and again to claim his rightful place in the pantheon of golden-throated singers.

Cornell Campbell 's old school, sweet singing voice is a unique sound to be cherished and remembered. Today, with 50 years of music-making experience and over 40 album releases, his presentation is still entrancing. With Studio One, Bunny Lee, and Joe Gibbs hits filling his classic song catalog, Cornell Campbell is still the Gorgon.

Biography: Sister I-live

Sister I-live was born and raised in the parish of Westmoreland in Jamaica. Her first singing experiences began in her local parish church and school choirs. She later became a participant in the local Youth Club concerts, where she was loved and accepted. This exposure inspired her to start writing her and recording her own compositions.

She and her friends would frequently go to the beach side with guitars and drums and chant music for hours. Sister I-live loved to attend dancehall sessions in clubs by the ocean, where she loved to dance long hours to all kinds of music.

From an early age Sister I-live was interested in seeking a spiritual way of life. At fourteen years old, she began visiting and reasoning with local Rasta breathren and sistren. Sister I-live loved attending the Nyabinghi groundation gatherings where Rasta people would chant together along with hand drums. In 1973, she began to grow her dreadlocks and further her commitment to her faith. When she was 22, Sister I- live moved from the Westmoreland countryside to Kingston where she lived with her world-renowned cousin, Peter Tosh. Peter was a mentor to I-live, and he encouraged her to continue singing.

In 1984 Sister I- live moved to California, where she started performing in the DJ style, toasting over the local sound systems. Then she began singing on stage shows, backing up local reggae performers. In 1987, she got together her own band called the Chosen Few, with some of the best reggae musicians in the Bay Area. In the 90's and early 2000's, I-live and her band performed consistently locally and then spreaded out around the West Coast and Canada.

Sister I- Live's first release for Out Of Many One, Jah Guide was released in 1989. Her follow up release, Jealousy, (2002) was recorded and mixed in Kingston with some of the best reggae studio musicians in the world. Her recorded music provides a strong foundation for her live show repetoire. Sister I-live is a lively performer whose dancing infectiously moves her audiences. Her effervescent, bubbling, upbeat vibes are contagious as she sings and dances.

Alton Ellis receives one of the evening's Lifetime Achievement Awards from Eric Kohler (KJAZZ 88.1FM)

Reggae Festival E-Guide

Desmond Dekker, L-R: Dennis Alcapone, Alton Ellis & Owen Gray

5 LEGENDS...One Night Only
By Lady J, Photos by Justone

As we continue to remember Jamaican pioneers like Desmond Dekker, who recently transcended, we must similarly acknowledge the legends who work to preserve Jamaican culture as Alton Ellis, Pat Kelly, Owen Gray, Derrick Morgan, and Dennis Alcapone. These pioneers did just that at the Hollywood Ska and Reggae Fest. Presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards by both Eric Kohler (KJAZZ 88.1FM) and MC Junor Francis(KSPC 88.7 FM & KXLU 88.9FM), each artist delivered incredible music sets on the Henry Fonda Theater's Music Box stage.

Known for his releases based on popular American R&B hits, fourty-five year veteran, Owen Gray performed soul classics "I Feel Good" and "Please Don't Let Me Go"; While the musical liquidator and original veteran DJ, Dennis Alcapone, toasted "DJ's Choice" and "Cry Tough". Escorted on stage, the legally blind King of Jamaican Ska Derrick Morgan took us down memory lane with tunes like "Reggae Train" and "Rudy No Fear". A truly captivating falsetto from Pat Kelly brought about a huge audience response as he performed "Minstrel & Queen", (which is also known as "Queen Majesty"). He was followed by comrade and Rocksteady innovator, Alton Ellis, who was accompanied by his son, Christopher Ellis who shared vintage classics that earned his father induction into the International Reggae & World Music Awards Halls of Fame in 2006.

Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone and Owen Gray came out as a finale to do a tribute to the late Desmond Dekker singing "The Israelites" and "007" to the Music Box crowd. This was the first time these artists appeared together on the same stage, history marked a momentous time for the Reggae Forum Production event.

HA HA HA - That's Funny!
By Curt Byrum

Not much in life is free. We are charged for almost every kind of entertainment. We are taxed on our pre-taxed dollars and then taxed again for the things we buy. There are interest charges, finder's fees, license fees, document fees, transitional fees, convenience fees, escrows, mortgages, education expenses, insurances, uninsured motorist insurance, registration fees, late fees, parking meters, bridge tolls and the list goes on. It would seem that everything has a price. Yet, one of the most beneficial things we can do for ourselves mentally, spiritually, and physically is totally without cost. Laughter is priceless.

Finding the good, it would seem has tremendous health benefits according to many recent studies. It improves health and immunity according to Dr. Madan Kataria of the school of Laughter and Yoga (www.laughteryoga.org). It also may help protect vital heart enzymes according to researchers at Cornell University. Laughter is the true homeopathic medicine and it's free. If you find the news is just too much, try taking a break, watch a funny movie, see a comedy show, or just hang out with good friends. Whatever you do, find a place to laugh! Until next week, consider this short list of oxymorons, they're good for a few chuckles.

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
