REGGAE IN THE PARK: ENJOY HIP-HOP, ROOTS AND REGGAE WITH THE INSPIRATIONAL ROOTS MUSIC OF JAMAICA'S FAVORITE HARMONY TRIO: THE ITALS ALSO TRE HARDSON (AKA SLIM KID TRE FROM THE PHARCYDE) AND ZION ROOTS AT TRUCKEE REGIONAPARK ON JULY 15

The Itals, featuring Keith Porter, David Isaacs and Ronnie Davis are Jamaica's sweetest harmony trio! Catch them live on Saturday, July 15 at Truckee Regional Park in Truckee, CA at 6pm along with Tre Hardson Gates open at 5pm and Zion Roots will start performing at 6pm.Children welcome. Arts and crafts and food vendors will create a true festival feeling for the whole family.

In the patois of Jamaica's Rastafarians, the word "ital" means pure and healthy, unpolluted. These adjectives suitably describe the sound and message of The Itals, one of Reggae's premier vocal groups, who hail from the beautiful countryside of Jamaica's Westmoreland Parish. Lead singer Keith Porter explains, "Well, we really not like the environment of the city. We like to live inna country and come into the city and do our work and then go back. You get more better food fe eat out there, you know? More fresher food and fresher air and ting like that." Original members, Keith Porter and David Isaacs, deliver rock-solid and crystal-clear roots harmony sounds

Tre Hardson, known as "Slim Kid Tre" introduced himself to the hip-hop scene as a member of the influential group The Pharcyde whose debut album, Bizarre Ride II, was released in 1992. With an eccentric mix of humorous rhymes and far out lyrical imagery, backed by a funky jazz laden soundscape, The Pharcyde blew fans away on their worldwide tour with De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. Tre Hardson is touring in support of his new release SLIM KID3'S CAFE.

Sierra Nevada heats up Anderson Valley

Two stages, 100+ degree heat, 40+ acts, food from India, Ethiopia, even Thai iced tea with coconut milk, tee shirts for sale in multiple colors, this festival was like no other!

The little town of Boonville, California located in the scenic Anderson Valley of Mendocino county will never be the same. The artists played to a 4500+ crowd of people that came from all points around North America and beyond to hear the eclectic world music and reggae line up.

Here are a few highlight photos from editor Justine Ketola. She found herself in the dancehall on Friday night after the stages were dark enjoying the sounds of Jah Shaka and the Stur Gav sound system which included compelling light and graphic shows as well. Saturday night's dancehall featured stage performers U-Roy and Alika from Argentina touching the mike to nice up the party.

During the day on Saturday, Mad Professor mixed his own music in a dub session. Mishka graced the stage in the village area which was under whispy pine trees.

Veteran singers Cornell Campbell and Ken Boothe performed classic sets for this festival which traditionally includes many vintage reggae acts to its line up each year.

MC Makeda Dread met Fantan Mojah on Saturday before she hit the stage. Fantan Mojah had an amazing set on Sunday evening, with the fans singing along word for word to songs from his release HAIL THE KING.

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
Reggae Festival E-Guide
AmeriCorps Graduate, Lauren Beach
Eleven Months Post Katrina & a Special Thanks to AmeriCorps
By Curt Byrum

As many of you know, my niece Lauren Beach had been volunteering at Camp Premier in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana in the U.S. She was there assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita until her graduation from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps yesterday. This past year's AmeriCorp was the most difficult year for the program in its history due to the natural disaster. The program's CEO, David Eisner shed a tear at the graduation ceremony with his sincere feelings of being proud of the young people ranging from 18-24 years of age working in severe conditions. They wore masks in 100 degree heat, slept in cots showered in stalls on RV's and dodged biting insects. We are so proud of you Lauren!

You are probably aware that St. Bernard was one of the areas severely damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. What a lot of people don't know however, is that this community still desperately needs your help. Eleven months after the disaster, the Parish still looks like a war zone and residents are either living in trailers/ tents and have not returned home yet. Almost 2000 homes have been gutted out and there are still 28,000 homes to go. These people still need help.

I am writing to you with the hope that you will go down and volunteer in St. Bernard. If you are interested in volunteering, you can set this up individually or as a group through the Red Cross. You would stay at Camp Premier, where you would receive lodging, hot meals, and all safety equipment would be provided. The work is gutting out houses destroyed by the hurricane. By gutting, I mean, take all debris, mud, and sheetrock out of the damaged homes, so homeowners could begin the rebuilding process before the next season of hurricanes. Before gutting your first house, you would receive training. This work is physically challenging and extremely rewarding. If you or your group chooses to stay for an extended period of time, there would be opportunities presented to take on leadership roles, such as supervising other teams or recruiting new volunteers. You would need to provide your own transportation to the camp; I would be happy to help you research the most efficient way to get you/ your group here. Please pass this article on to all your family and friends so we can all work together to rebuild St. Bernard Parish.

Love and Peace,
Curt

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
