MATISYAHU
With special guests

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD

Following closely on the success of his new studio album Youth, Matisyahu will be making a few West Coast stops at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 8 and the award-winning Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on August 9 with special guests Michael Franti & Spearhead. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or at The Greek Theatre and Santa Barbara Bowl Box Offices.

The past two years have been filled with excitement and challenges for Matisyahu and his band mates known as Roots Tonic. Since the release of his 2004 debut, Shake Off The Dust... Arise and the phenomenal success of last year's Live At Stubb's and the single "King Without A Crown," Matisyahu has continued to bring his uncanny, electrifying fusion of orthodox Judaism and classic reggae music to millions of new listeners. Now, Matisyahu reflects and draws upon the myriad experiences that have led him to this pinnacle on his sophomore studio album, Youth.

Youth is a compelling mix of ancient and modern sounds and ideas. The propulsive title track, with its rallying cry "youth is the engine of the world," draws upon Matisyahu's studies of Chabad Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn as well as his own tumultuous past. On Youth, Matisyahu expands his musical universe.

Michael Franti and Spearhead are in performance to celebrate the release of the new CD Yell Fire! Partially recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, with Chris Blackwell, guests include Sly & Robbie and Gentleman. Yell Fire! is part of a thematic trilogy that includes the film and book I Know I'm Not Alone, which document Franti's recent visits to Iraq, Israel and Palestine.

Additional Michael Franti dates include a taping of the national syndicated E-Town at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, The Kaslo Jazz Festival on August 4th, Reggae On The River on August 6th (sold out) and the dates above with Matisyahu.

NEWS FLASH

Reggae Festival E-Guide

MVD Visual and Fari Int. Productions are pleased to announce the home viewing release of Roots Daughters for worldwide distribution on DVD.

Bianca Nyavingi Brynda's powerful and unique documentary stars Judy Mowatt and focuses on the Rastafari movement from the woman's perspective. Roots Daughters not only traces the origins of Rastafari roots from Africa, but it also examines various groups of Rasta-women from Jamaica, Guyana, South America, and Canada and their diverse social, political, and economic reality.

Beautifully shot on location by the award winning cinematographer Derek Rogers, the film focuses on the Rasta-women's fight for equality in a male dominated culture. Nyahbinghi, the central ritual of Rastafari, which includes drumming, chanting, and reasoning, is featured for the first time. Also, critical Rastafarian figures are profiled, including Emperor Haile Selassie (the spiritual leader of Rastafari), Marcus Garvey (Jamaica's Black Freedom fighter), and musical prophet/reggae superstar Bob Marley, who helped spread the movement around the world through his music.

Roots Daughters offers the viewer a rare opportunity to explore the organic and often complex Rastafarian world from the female's perspective. It's an evocative, thought-provoking, touching and unique testament to this intriguing culture.

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
Bob's Recipe for a strong family unit
By Curt Byrum

Greetings,

Anyone who has ever raised a child or helped knows that it takes a lot of hard work, patience and grace. The challenges of parenthood also produce some of the greatest rewards in life. Recently, I received an email that I wanted to share with you. It impressed me because it is simple, yet profound. This is Bob's Recipe for a strong family unit:

The following elements will be included in the recipe and blended to create a solid unit:

1) Knowing who you are.

2) Understanding and compassion

3) Love and respect

4) Express your feelings in a way that doesn't destroy the people in the family.

5) Have fun and laughter as often as possible.

6) Add your higher power, whatever that would be for you, as support for the family.

7) Love yourselves.

8) Have clear communications among the family members. Let the family members finish their communication without interruption.

9) Be a good listener.

10) Allow a family member to cry if they need to.

11) Look for support people in the community when needed to help the family through trouble periods.

Blend all ingredients to make a strong balanced family unit. Please feel free to add whatever measurements you desire of the above to meet your goals in life.

Who is Bob you ask? Bob Hesseltine is a retired cattlemen and father of two. He is a gentleman and kind-hearted soul. When I asked Bob why he created the recipe he replied, "Families are in turmoil in the World today. There is lot of lack of communication among families due to high stress levels of the parents having to cope with their daily lives. This recipe is a tool to use to lighten up some of the stress that goes on in the family unit." Thanks Bob for your wonderful insight.

Passionate for human rights and politics, bourgeoning writer Curt Byrum keeps his readers abreast of current news events. In addition to being a writer, he is a Respiratory Therapist residing in California. Curt also has a passion for music of all genres, writes experimental music and is a poet/lyricist. ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
