Reggae Festival E-Guide
Enrique Candioti

Interview with Enrique Candioti
by Justine Ketola

Enrique "Ambassador Jr." Candioti is the graphic designer for the cover 2006 Reggae Festival Guide. Aside from his design work, he is a DJ and has a life story which (like so many of us) includes reggae music.

Q.   When did you start to DJ?

I started in 1987 in Washington DC after going to a record store in Adams Morgan neighborhood and another on called Bebo's records which I think was in Maryland. I loved seeing all the 45's and 12" records and the fact you could listen to them before buying them was crucial to me. I went to college in Providence, Rhode Island and linked up with my friend Bill (aka White Lightning not to be confused with LA's White Lightning). Billy was a heavy reggae MC (and still is) and he took me to a club in Mattapan (Boston) called Blue Moon. That was my first experience in a true Jamaican dancehall environment. I also discovered a record store in Boston called Taurus records (also in Mattapan) which basically became my second home away from home. Junior Rodigan, one of Boston's biggest selectors, worked at Taurus and he became my biggest influence. Billy and I would drive to Boston every weekend religiously and we'd hit all the most hardcore clubs like Windsor Cricket Club, Sky Cap, and most notably The Station Cafe in Roxbury where Jr. Rodigan held a weekly Friday gig.

Q.  When did you start to design?

That happened while I was in art school. I was studying architecture and fine arts at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). I started playing at various clubs in Providence and I needed flyers so I started doing them myself first by cut and paste and then came the Macintosh computer. Then in 1989 I got a weekly Friday gig at a club called The Church House Inn. That night really blew up and we held it down for 3 years until it closed down.

Q. When did you meet Isaac and Livity Outernational?

I met Isaac in Santa Barbara after I moved to California (having spent 8 years in Brooklyn before that). I had become interested in environmental issues/sustainability and hemp. I went to the Solar Power store of which Isaac was part owner and that's how I was introduced to the whole Livity gang.

Q. Why are you such the cool vegan with a healthy lifestyle?

I've been a raw/vegan for exactly 8 years now. It's a choice I had to make after having my thyroid removed by conventional doctors which cause me to gain a tremendous amount of weight. Before I adopted the raw/vegan lifestyle I weighed almost 270 pounds! I started reading a lot and researching the topic of natural health, I was searching for a way out of my misery and everything I was learning just made so much sense to me in terms of how what we eat affects our bodies and our planet's health. My favorite authors on health are Norman Walker and Arnold Ehret . I also gained an enormous amount of knowledge from my friend Dr. Fred Bisci in Staten Island NY who has been a raw foodist himself for more than 40 years and has a PHD in nutritional science.

Q. How long did you live in Argentina, New York, other places?

I lived in Argentina on and off for 9 years. I'm 41 now . We kept moving a lot due to my father's job. I lived in West Germany for 4.5 years, Switzerland 5 years and I was born in London England where I spent 2 years. I lived in New York 8 years.

Q. Your Dad is the Ambassador to Germany right?

Yes my father is a diplomat and is currently the Argentine ambassador to Germany. He started working in the foreign service at age 21 and worked his way up all those years to get where he is now. I really admire him for that. He's had an amazing career as a diplomat and is very well respected among his peers. By the way my selector name Ambassador Jr was given to me by my friend Bill in Rhode Island.

Q. When did you move to Ojai?  Why?

I moved to Ojai in June 2003 after spending 8 years living in Brooklyn, New York, (Bedford Stuyvesant to be exact). New York was cool for a while but when I changed my lifestyle it just became too stressful and I started craving warmer weather and a more natural environment. My good friend Paul Nison who is also an author on health, was spending some time in Ojai learning about organic farming so I came and stayed there with him for 2 weeks. I immediately decided this was a perfect place for me. The weather and the surf, the natural foods. The only thing that was tough was leaving all the Jamaican/Caribbean culture of New York. That was hard for a while, but give and take, it was worth it. That's why I started doing this weekly night at the Drink with Ezra and John which as you know is now the biggest club night in Ventura, Calif. (Thursdays at the Drink, 281 W. Main St.)

Great Shape! Inc. 1000 Smiles Jamaican Dental Project Helping Children Since 1988

Now is your chance to support local volunteers, needy children and have plenty of fun along the way. Great Shape Inc. is gearing up for the second annual "1000 Smiles!" Dinner Party and Auction. Join us for Caribbean food, live and silent auctions, trip giveaways and live music. The fundraiser is Saturday, July 8th from 6pm-11pm at Eden Farm 4723 Hwy. 66 Ashland, Oregon. The $100 tickets are good for dinner, drink and 1 in 500 chance to win an all inclusive vacation in Jamaica.

This is an opportunity to raise money for two volunteer projects in Jamaica. Great Shape Inc. is partnering with Smile Power International and Sandals Resorts to offer free dental care for thousands of Jamaican families. There is only ONE dentist for every 80,000 people in Jamaica. Gum disease and tooth decay can cause problems including heart disease, low-birth weight, even death. Many Jamaicans have never seen a dentist. Our volunteers are dental professionals and just good Samaritans. We’ll provide teeth cleaning, extractions, sealants, prevention education and plenty of supplies.

Volunteers come from the Rogue Valley in Oregon and around the U.S.. You can help too. You can join them at the fundraiser or volunteer for one of the two humanitarian trips planned to Jamaica in the fall of 2006.

THE 21ST ANNUAL SUMMERJAM, JULY 14-16 COLOGNE, GERMANY
MORE MUSIC FOR THE NEXT DECADE

Editor's note: The following message is from the organizers of Summerjam

Twenty-five years after his passing, it looks as if, the music and the legend of Bob Marley live forever throughout the world and with each day the music becomes a little more popular and more influential. Summerjam begins the next Decade and by presenting artists whose music expands on the tradition as the next generation of multi-faceted Caribbean music. We have also included some authentic Artists from the last decades. These "Originals" have an endless repertoire, which has provided material for many multi-cultural musicians to help develop their own sound, which brings club dance floors to quake all over the world.

To satisfy this diversity, we constructed the program on the different stages, so that you can choose just as you feel like or where your interests may lie. And because the distances on the island are - as known - not too far, the stages can be reached in a short time, as long as you don't get stuck in the roomy vending bazaar, or lay down in the grass at Circus Changhigh or simply sit down at the lakeside chatting to nice people and enjoying the atmosphere.

The night belongs - undisputed - to the hottest tunes. Those who have experienced a Dancehall Night at Summerjam know about the charged, passionate atmosphere that the sound systems create.

But the most important contribution to Summerjam, IS YOU! Because without you the very special vibe of this Festival would not exist!

So let’s welcome the next decade with peace, love & harmony.

The new SUMMERJAM FESTIVAL MAGAZINE is prepared to be downloaded. Go to the website: www.summerjam.de click on "downloads" and you will see two versions to download the large one with all announcements and the small one without the announcements.

Or send us a post paid (within Europe) DIN A5 envelope (with 1.45,- Euro) and we will send you two original SUMMERJAM Mags.

Address your order to:
HEADWORD - SUMMERJAM MAG 2006
Alexanderstr. 78 / 70182 Stuttgart

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
Reggae Festival E-Guide
We celebrate the independent spirit with you!
By Curt Byrum

During the month of July many countries celebrate their country's Independence Day. Some of these countries include; Algeria, Canada, Argentina, Bahamas, Belarus, Colombia, Malaysia, Peru, Slovakia, and The United States. At the Reggae Eguide, we love freedom... so we celebrate the independent spirit with you!

Last week we asked you to tell us what matters most to you. Here is a response from an E-Guide subscriber in Toronto, Canada:

"Greetings .... what matter's most to me? ... Truth and honesty from family and loved-ones. No matter how the world go-so, I can always rely on the ones close to me, to tell it like it is. Keep a good thought....ever forward, backward never.

Always, Shonna"

Thank you Shonna for your insight. I believe we can all agree that family, friends, and freedom are all great reasons to party!

Love and Peace,
Curt

What languages did Jamaican Patois evolve from?

Patois evolved from the Creole English and a twisted alchemy of the mother tongue peppered with African, Portuguese, and Spanish terms and Rastafarian slang. Most Jamaicans will vary the degree and intensity of their Patois according to whom they're speaking with.

ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
