Reggae Festival E-Guide

Bob Marley Roots Rock Reggae Festival

Reggae ambassadors Ziggy and Stephen Marley, and Bunny Wailer, along with Ozomatli, stir it up on their family tribute to the Legend, the Bob Marley: Roots, Rock, Reggae Festival.

Ziggy and Stephen Marley, two of Bob Marley's children who were both tremendously influenced by their father, have carved out their own unique reggae sounds. The brothers, along with siblings Sharon and Cedella, released their first track as Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers in 1979, when Stephen was only six years old. "We've been making music together since birth," Stephen said. "Our first song was produced by our father, called 'Children Playing in the Streets'." The group, blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae, went on to win three Grammy awards.

Ziggy released his latest and second solo album, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide), on July 2. Embracing both the spiritual and emotional side of life, it expands upon the personal, social and political themes explored in his debut CD, Dragonfly. Its musical center is clearly reggae, peppered by African percussion and other flavors. Friendship is one of the album's recurring themes, whether as the core of monogamous love or the connective tissue of global brotherhood.

This performance marks the first time that he has performed this new material live, and Stephen Marley's first headlining tour, where he performs songs from his upcoming solo debut, Mind Control.

Bunny Wailer, a key member of reggae's musical foundation, grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Together they formed the legendary group the Wailers. Bunny's strong tenor vocals were used primarily for the band's harmonies, but he occasionally sang lead on such Marley tracks as "Dancing Shoes" and "Sunday Morning." His 1996 solo album, Hall of Fame (RAS Records), a tribute to Bob Marley, earned Bunny his third Grammy. This show is the first time that Ziggy, Stephen and Bunny Wailer have joined together for a tour.

Ozomatli, which describes itself as a multi-ethnic, political, Latin-breakbeat-salsa-funk-reggae-hip-hop-rock orchestra, will release a new record, Don't Mess With The Dragon, in early 2007. It was recorded over the past year in San Francisco and a handful of L.A. studios. The Los Angeles collective won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy for their pastiche of hip-hop, Latin and Middle Eastern styles on 2004's Street Signs.

The Roots Rock Reggae Festival tour starts this week at Reggae On The River.

Reggae Festival E-Guide

Miss Lou passes on

Louise Bennett-Coverley passed away in Toronto, Canada on July 26, 2006. She was a beloved part of the Jamaican Arts Culture. As Kingston native Patrick Lewis Higgs told Reggae Festival Guide she "help make patios get exposure. She take it up and all over the world in a comedic form." As he recalled his childhood and Miss Lou as she was known, he said "We used to participate in her talent contest 'Ring Ding' for the youth that was held in front of JBC. And every day before the midday news she was heard with her program 'Auntie Roachie Say' which told bits of wisdom from an imaginary aunt."

She also had a tremendous influence on the music community as her gift for the word and delivery of the cultural stories permeated the climate during reggae's formative years. This gift is explored in the book DUBWISE by Canada-based Jamaican author, Klive Walker (Insomniac Press, 2005)

Miss Lou will lie in State at the Jamaica National Arena on August 7 & 8.

Funeral services for Dr. the Hon. Louise Bennett Coverley will be held at Coke Methodist Church in Kingston at 2 pm on August 9, 2006

Louise Bennett was born on September 7, 1919. She was a Jamaican poet and activist. From Kingston, Jamaica Louise Bennett remains a household name in Jamaica, a "Living Legend" and a cultural icon. She received her education from Ebenezer and Calabar Elementary Schools, St. Simon’s College, Excelsior College, Friends College (Highgate).

Although she lived in Toronto, Canada for the last decade she still receives the homage of the expatriate West Indian community in the north as well as a large Canadian following.

She was described as Jamaica's leading comedienne, as the "only poet who has really hit the truth about her society through its own language", and as an important contributor to her country of "valid social documents reflecting the way Jamaicans think and feel and live. Through her poems in Jamaican patois, she raised the dialect of the Jamaican folk to an art level which is acceptable to and appreciated by all in Jamaica.

In her poems she was able to capture all the spontaneity of the expression of Jamaicans' joys and sorrows, their ready, poignant and even wicked wit, their religion and their philosophy of life. Her first dialect poem was written when she was fourteen years old. A British Council Scholarship took her to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where she studied in the late 1940’s.

Bennett not only had a scholarship to attend the academy but she auditioned and won a scholarship. After graduation she worked with repertory companies in Coventry, Huddersfield and Amersham as well as in intimate revues all over England. On her return to Jamaica she taught drama to youth and adult groups both in social welfare agencies and for the University of the West Indies Extra Mural Department.

She lectured extensively in the United States and the United Kingdom on Jamaican folklore and music and represented Jamaica all over the world. She married Eric Winston Coverley in 1954 (who died in 2002) and has one stepson and several adopted children. She enjoys Theatre, Movies and Auction sales.

Her contribution to Jamaican cultural life was such that she was honored with the M.B.E., the Norman Manley Award for Excellence (in the field of Arts), the Order of Jamaica (1974) the Institute of Jamaica's Musgrave Silver and Gold Medals for distinguished eminence in the field of Arts and Culture, and in 1983 the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies. In September 1988 her composition "You're going home now", won a nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema ad Television, for the best original song in the movie "Milk and Honey."

In 1998 she received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from York University, Toronto, Canada. The Jamaica Government also appointed her Cultural Ambassador at Large for Jamaica. On Jamaica’s independence day 2001, Bennett-Coverley was appointed as a Member of the Order of Merit for her distinguished contribution to the development of the Arts and Culture.

Reggae Festival E-Guide

Jamaican Independence Day August 6

The Jamaica National Flag The Jamaica National Flag was first raised on Independence Day, August 6, 1962. The country was formerly a colony of the British West Indies. A bipartisan committee of the Jamaica House of Representatives designed the Jamaican Flag which consists of a diagonal cross with four triangles placed side by side. The diagonal cross is gold; the top and bottom triangles are green; and the hoist and fly (side) triangles are black. "The sun shineth, the land is green and the people are strong and creative" is the symbolism of the colours of the flag. Black depicts the strength and creativity of the people; Gold, the natural wealth and beauty of sunlight; and green, hope and agricultural resources.

The Jamaican Coat of Arms The Jamaican national motto is ‘Out of Many One People’, based on the population’s multi-racial roots. The motto is represented on the Coat of Arms, showing a male and female member of the Taino tribe standing on either side of a shield which bears a red cross with five golden pineapples. The crest shows a Jamaican crocodile mounted on the Royal Helmet of the British Monarchy and mantling.

National Bird - The Doctor-Bird (Trochilus polytmus) or Swallow-Tail Hummingbird The doctor bird or swallow tail humming bird, is one of the most outstanding of the 320 species of hummingbirds. It lives only in Jamaica. These birds’ beautiful feathers have no counterpart in the entire bird population and they produce iridescent colours characterstic only of that family. In addition to these beautiful feathers, the mature male has tow long tails which stream behind him when he flies. For years the doctor bird has been immortalized in Jamaican folklore and song. The origin of the name ‘Docor-bird’ is somewhat unsettled. It has been said that the name was given because the erect black crest and tails resemble the top hat and long tail coats doctors used to wear in the old days. Other schools of thought believe that it refers to the way the birds lance the flowers with their bills to extract nectar. According to Frederic Cassidy the bird is an object of superstition. The Arawaks spread the belief that the bird had magical powers. They called it the ‘God bird’, believing it was the reincarnation of dead souls. This is manifested in a folk song which says: "Doctor Bud a cunny bud, hard bud fe dead". (It is a clever bird which cannot be easily killed).

TRUCKEE REGGAE FESTIVAL WITH JUNIOR REID (THE VOICE OF BLACK UHURU PLUS THREE MORE BANDS ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 AT TRUCKEE REGIONAL PARK

Renegade Productions brings the Truckee Reggae Festival back this summer with the Jamaican-born singer Junior Reid the voice of Black Uhuru. Also performing with Reid are the Reggae Angels, Zion Roots and the Instant Messengers. The gates open at 4:30pm and the music starts at 5pm. This is an all ages venue and fun for the whole family with arts/crafts and food vendors. No dogs, alcohol or glass allowed to be brought in to the venue. The Lyons Club is on site selling beer, wine and water. Tickets are $20.

Reid is best known as the man that gave us the monster reggae hit "One Blood" as well as being the man that replaced Michael Rose as lead vocalist with Black Uhuru. Junior gets his inspiration from places, people and things, and has embraced BoBo Shanti, an orthodox branch of the Rastafarian religion.

He recorded his first single at the age of fourteen for the "late great"Hugh Mundell and then went on to form his own band "Voice of Progress" and recorded the album "Mini-Bus Driver".

A strong admirer of Black Uhuru, Reid slipped with ease into the role of lead vocalist. Collaborating with Duckie and Puma, he delivered "Brutal, to critical acclaim from the media and public.

From his early days in the Waterhouse area of Kingston, Junior Reid was busy establishing himself as a singer of note with the group Voice of Progress. An early album for the Negus Roots label featured the track "Mini Bus Driver", and the Junior Reid sound was felt throughout the world. Interestingly enough, the Negus Roots label out of England was also responsible for first recording Don Carlos, also a Waterhouse singer and close associate of Junior Reid. Reid started turning out many hit, including, "Boom Shak-A-Lak" and "Foreign Mind". It was at this early peak of popularity when he was asked to sing lead for Black Uhuru (1985). Around 1991, Junior Reid set up the JR Recording Studio and record distribution company in Kingston, Jamaica. A number of top Jamaican artist have recorded there, and Junior Reid has produced a good number of critically respected albums. From his humble beginnings in the ghetto of Waterhouse to the CEO of a major recording studio and record label, Junior Reid has accomplished a great deal on this short time on earth, and his future continues to look even brighter.

In 1986 Fenton formed a band on the West coast called The Chosen Few. In 1989 the band re-arranged and was called The Elevations. Fenton sang lead and harmony vocals, and played keyboards. With the Elevations he produced two albums - "Jah Guide" and "Good Judgment". In 1992 Fenton left the Elevations and started the Reggae Angels.

With the Reggae Angels Fenton has produced "Guard the Honor", "Jealousy", "Truth and Conviction", "Spirit, Signs and Wonders", "Which Road will you Choose", "Live Positive", "Come To Jah", "Save Our Souls", "A Heart With Love" and "Balance", along with six instrumental albums. Augustus Pablo is featured playing melodica and synthesizer on the earlier works adding his melodious far eastern sound. The early mixing was done in Jamaica with some of the foremost reggae engineers including Sylvan Morris, David Rowe, Soljie, Dr. Marshall and Hugh Palmer. Scientist mixed the next four albums in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. "Balance" was mixed at Lion and Fox recording studios by Jim Fox in July 2003 The Reggae Angels have one of the most prolific catalogues of any U.S.- based reggae band, including 12 CDs and numerous dubs. Fans of Reggae know The Angels deliver high-energy performances with a happy uplifting sound and a deep sincere message. Their music speaks of God consciousness - beneficial truths for all humanity. The lyrics are condensed spiritual insight and teachings - the message. The Reggae Angels have their own recording studio in Oakland, California called The Workshop. Their focus is on spirituality, affirming and clarifying the message of the prophets - advice and prayers to bring us nearer to God.

IN JAH'S NAME WE PRAY
A Riddle of Sorts
By Curt Byrum

What if? Without "if", there is no life. It is completely a waste of time and energy to consider the "if's" of our past unless we are attempting to lift the if to a higher state of future life. Confused yet? If so, you are probably properly living life. Life is hard. So we must deal with it. What is it? It is everything that fills the space between what we know and all that is unknown. It is all we wish to become and everything that we are. It is everything we lack... laid upon all that we seek. It is the smallest measurable moment in time multiplied by infinity. It is to be appreciated and feared. It is surrounded by all that is, and was and is to come. It is bigger than us. It is smaller than us. What is it?

Passionate for human rights and politics, bourgeoning writer Curt Byrum keeps his readers abreast of current news events. In addition to being a writer, he is a Respiratory Therapist residing in California. Curt also has a passion for music of all genres, writes experimental music and is a poet/lyricist. ABOUT REGGAE FESTIVAL E-GUIDE

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the food, music and spirituality that define the unique and diverse community. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, Caribbean recipes and travel, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter. Within a few months, the E-Guide went from less than 100 to over 2500 subscribers! [Click here for amount of current subscribers]. In May of 2005, we upgraded the appearance to full color and now, a year later, we're back to free subscriptions and proud to announce our new Editor, Justine Ketola. You may email her at editorreggaefestivalEguide.com.
